|Many men when they retire or are made redundancy find it difficult to adjust to a life without work, mainly because it was one of their primary commitments and source of social contact. Recognising the extent and potential problems of this situation a number of locally based men have got together to find a solution that is both effective and acceptable to the men affected. Drawing on experience from Australia and elsewhere they have created a “Men’s Shed”. At its core a Men’s Shed aims to keep men physically and mentally active. A big part of the effectiveness of this approach is the social interaction which takes place as they socialise and work together. Getting them involved in meaningful activity keeps them happier, healthier, and stimulated.
A Men’s Shed is a place where men meet, socialise, and undertake some sort of activity. Thus a shed has a friendly welcoming atmosphere and an area for relaxation and tea or coffee where the world can be put to rights, engage in banter, swapping stories and advice, and perhaps conversations on topics of general interest occur. There is also an area where practical activities take place that are matched to the interests of the participants. The key is that a man can come along to the shed, have a look around and have a discussion about what he is interested in to find something that matches which makes him want to come back. It should be stressed that although the shed is aimed at older men is is not exclusive and anyone who wants to take part in the activities is more welcome to come along.
